A school in China has come under fire after an instructor forcibly cut a student’s hair off in front of his classmates in a now-viral video that has caused uproar over mainland Chinese schools forcing students to look a certain way. The unnamed student from Feiyun Middle School in Ruian, Zhejiang province, eastern China, was forced to undergo a haircut by a People’s Liberation Army (PLA) instructor in the school’s playground as his schoolmates watched during military training. In the confronting video of the incident, the PLA soldier used a pair of scissors to cut the boy’s hair as he sat cowering on the ground, leaning on one elbow and lowering his head to avoid the scissors. The report aimedto follow up on earlier recommendations made by the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Myanmar (FFM) on economic interests of the Myanmar military. The FFM was formed after the military's brutal campaign against the Rohingyas in Rakhine State. The campaign, which was described by the US as genocide, forced about 7.5 lakh Rohingyas into Bangladesh in 2017. In 2021, the military took over control of the country, ousting the elected government. Since then, there were continuous conflicts between the military and pro-democracy people. About 2,000 people have been killed in the conflicts. The UN report released yesterday reiterated the FFM's recommendations to impose targeted financial sanctions on the Myanmar military and its economic interests as well as arms embargos. It also highlights that such measures must respect human rights and that efforts must be made to mitigate foreseeable socio-economic impacts.
