Jodi Hain will now have to fork out an eye-watering £6720 for electricity alone at the Something Different Hairdressers in Guardbridge, Fife, as the cost-of-living crisis worsens. The 34-year-old, who has run the small business for the last eight years after taking over from her mum Paula Tournier and auntie, previously paid £1610.32 a year before being given the new estimate earlier this week.

German power for 2023 rose as much as 6.6 percent to trade at €1,050 per megawatt-hour while the equivalent French contract soared above €1,000. 20% of last year’s level, citing pipeline maintenance and other excuses. Markets have noticed. EU gas futures have more than tripled since mid-June, soaring past the spike they saw when Putin launched his invasion in February. But Western powers show little sign of blinkingthat is, rolling back sanctions on Russiaand the vertical rise is starting to look like panic. “Speculators are pricing in as much bad news as we could possibly have: no Russian gas, no LNG [liquefied natural gas], and a really cold winter,” says Jonathan Stern, founder of the Gas Research Program at the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies. What traders aren’t focusing on is the Western democracies’ resourceful response to Putin’s noose-tightening. EU gas storage tanks have kept right on schedule with LNG and extra supply from Norway, and will likely reach their 80% capacity target by Nov. 1, predicts Marko Papic, chief strategist at the Clocktower Group. “Europe is filling storage at exactly the same rate as last year,” he says. “Russia didn’t count on this happening.” The gas squeeze is pushing demand destruction. Europe’s use of the fuel has already contracted by 11% this year, and a looming recession could cut it by another 10%, Stern estimates. Analysts predict that Moscow will keep dribbling in some supply, too, to stoke market uncertainty and keep a few bridges unburned for the postwar environment. “Russia does expect to sell more gas to Europe in the future,” says Jacob Mandel, who follows the industry for Aurora Energy Research.... .

Leonid Ikan/iStock via Getty Images Vermilion Energy (NYSE:VET) may be able to generate US$1.5 billion in positive cash flow in 2023 and US$1.2 billion in 2024 at current strip prices, with sky-high European natural gas prices having a major effect on its results. Vermilion deal (in late 2021) to acquire a larger stake in Corrib will basically pay off by early 2023 due to the strength in natural gas prices. There is the potential for European windfall taxes to reduce Vermilion's projected cash flow though. European natural gas prices are around US$57 for 2023 and in the mid-$30s (US dollars) for 2024, making it worth over four times the price of oil for 2023 and around three times the price of oil for 2024 on a per BOE basis. I now estimate Vermilion's value at US$27 per share in a scenario where long-term (after 2023) prices average $70 WTI oil, US$3.25 AECO and US$13 for European natural gas. This includes a reduction in Vermilion's value for the potential European windfall tax. There is uncertainty about how long super high European natural gas prices will last. Current strip for 2024 and 2025 is still well above my long-term prices. Thus in a scenario where commodity prices follow current strip until the end of 2024 instead, I'd estimate Vermilion's value at US$30 to US$31 per share. Free Cash Flow Projections Vermilion's Corrib acquisition (expected to close in Q4 2022) should pay off quickly due to high NBP natural gas prices.... .

Naturals salon If European natural gas prices follow current strip until the end of 2023, then I'd estimate Vermilion's value at around US$27 per share (in a long-term $70 WTI oil scenario). If they follow current strip until the end of 2024, Vermilion's value is boosted to around US$30 to US$31 per share, and this rises to around US$32 to US$33 per share if it follows current strip until the end of 2025.Land drilling oil rig operated by Oil and Natural Gas Corp in India on Tuesday, March 8, 2022.
